The Van Salesman is responsible for the direct sale and delivery of dairy, ice cream, and beverage products to retail, wholesale, and food-service outlets on an assigned route. The role combines selling, cash collection, and delivery, and is accountable for growing distribution, revenue, and customer coverage within the territory.

Key Responsibilities

  • Sell and deliver products directly to customers on the assigned daily route, following the agreed journey plan and call frequency.
  • Achieve monthly sales value and volume targets by SKU, category (dairy, ice cream, beverages), and customer.
  • Grow numeric and SKU distribution — actively sell the full product range into every outlet rather than relying on repeat orders of the same few items.
  • Onboard new outlets and re-activate lapsed customers to expand the active customer base on the route.
  • Maintain accurate stock records in the van (loading, sales, returns, closing stock) and reconcile daily with the warehouse/supervisor.
  • Collect payments (cash/cheque/credit as applicable), issue invoices, and ensure timely reconciliation and banking of collections.
  • Monitor product freshness and expiry dates; manage stock rotation (FIFO) and process returns/damages per company policy, especially for chilled and frozen items.
  • Ensure products are kept at the correct temperature throughout loading, transport, and delivery to protect quality.
  • Support merchandising at point of sale — correct shelf/chiller placement, pricing, and stock rotation — in coordination with the Merchandiser where assigned.
  • Report competitor activity, pricing, and market intelligence to the Sales Supervisor.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with outlet owners/staff to protect and grow shelf space and order volumes.
  • Maintain the delivery vehicle in clean, roadworthy condition and comply with traffic and safety regulations.
  • Complete daily/weekly sales and coverage reports (calls made, strike rate, distribution, collections) accurately and on time.

Requirements & Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent; a diploma in sales/business is an advantage.
