TOWN OF LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, TN

PUBLIC WORKS LABORER

STARTING PAY: $20 an hour

FULL TIME POSITION at 40 hours per week

This employee performs a variety of manual labor and light equipment operation tasks in the area of street and right of way maintenance. The employee is under the supervision of the Public Works Supervisor. Instructions to the employee are generally detailed and specific. EQUIPMENT The employee will use a variety of hand tools and small machinery such as a weed eater, chain saw, mower, etc. The employee may also operate a variety of light or occasionally heavy equipment such as a backhoe, dump truck, etc. The employee will be required to lift, carry, dig, climb, bend and move moderately to very heavy objects. The employee may be exposed to all types of weather conditions with possible exposure to fumes, chemicals, or toxic substances. In addition, the employee may occasionally be required to work in high places.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS OF THE JOB

Garbage Truck Duty – Twice Weekly – Ride on the back of the truck and assist with emptying garbage cans.

Performs a variety of general labor duties such as painting, mowing, filling pot holes, weed trimming, and general street and right of way maintenance.

Loads and unloads dirt, gravel, trash, refuse and other debris.

Picks up litter, brush, leaves, and junk.

Repairs streets, curbs, and sidewalks.

Paints street markings and repairs/installs street signage.

Removes debris from street rights of ways, catch basins, drainage ways and other town property.

Operates mowing machines and other small machinery. Operates a variety of light and on occasion heavy equipment such as a knuckle boom or snowplow.

ADDITIONAL EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED Assists with parks and recreation grounds and facility maintenance. Cleans equipment and tools. Performs routine maintenance on machinery, equipment, and tools. Performs related work as required

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND ABILITIES Knowledge of the materials and equipment used in general maintenance and construction work. Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions. Ability to carry out instructions. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and members of the general public. Ability to safely and properly operate heavy and light equipment.
