About the Position
The City of Wilmington is accepting applications for future Water Laborer openings in the Water Department. This posting is intended to create a pool of qualified candidates who may be considered when vacancies occur.
The Water Laborer plays an important support role in maintaining and repairing the City’s water distribution system, as well as maintaining equipment, facilities, and surrounding grounds.
This is an unclassified position, not subject to Civil Service testing or eligibility lists.
Key Responsibilities
Assist in concrete repair and replacement of catch basin curbs, sidewalks, drive approaches, and manholes
Assist in repairing, servicing, and maintaining taps, mains, water lines, fire hydrants, and service boxes
Perform hydrant flushing and valve exercising programs
Maintain the plant, towers, pits, pump stations, and surrounding grounds (mowing, trimming, trash removal, spraying fences, hauling materials, and snow removal as needed)
Assist in maintenance and cleaning of equipment, vehicles, and tools
Attend training, meetings, and safety seminars as directed
Comply with all OSHA safety standards and departmental procedures
Demonstrate regular and predictable attendance
Perform other duties as assigned
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED
Must be at least 18 years of age
Valid State of Ohio driver’s license and insurability under the City’s insurance plan
Ability to perform heavy manual labor in adverse weather conditions
Preferred Skills and Abilities
Basic knowledge of water distribution systems and components
Experience with construction or public works operations
Proficiency with hand and power tools
Ability to follow instructions, work as part of a team, and maintain effective communication
Work Environment
Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, chemicals, loud noise, and construction hazards
May work in confined spaces, around moving mechanical equipment, and in inclement weather
Must be able to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
Classified as medium work per U.S. Department of Labor standards
Compensation and Benefits
Starting Hourly Rate: $17.84
Comprehensive benefits package including health insurance, paid leave, and participation in Ohio Public Employees Retirement System (OPERS)
