Summary

About the position: This position is Non-Appropriated Fund (NAF) and will be assigned to the Outdoor Recreation at Langley Air Force Base, VA.

This is a Temporary Flexible position, not to exceed 30 September 2026.

There are no guaranteed hours, however the employee may be scheduled 0 to 40 hours per week.

The primary purpose of this position is to observe swimming area to ensure safety of patrons.

Duties

  • Responsible for overseeing and coordinating activities at a designated pool. Serves as lead lifeguard and performs lifeguard duites.
  • Inspects and sets up facilities for scheduled activities, i.e. open swim, swim lessons, pool parties, lap swim, etc., and ensures the facility is opened at the scheduled times with adequate staffing. Overseas pool operations during scheduled shift.
  • Ensures staff complies with current policies, procedures, and written instructions.
  • Continuously observes swimming area to ensure safety of patrons. Maintains order and enforces established rules of safety and behavior.
  • Takes immediate/appropriate action to rescue swimmers in trouble and administers first aid, calls for medical assistance, follows established procedures and completes required reports in the event of injury, accident, near drowning or drowning.
  • Cleans and maintains swimming facilities to include pool, bathhouses, dressing rooms, and showers, ensuring that they are kept sanitary and meet established standards for inspections. Ensures hourly chemical checks are conducted and documented. Inspects facilities and reports problems to the supervisor.
  • Ensures only authorized participants are admitted, checks-in patrons, accepts payments, completes cash accountability and other reports, makes deposits or submits as directed. Ensures required measures are completed and the facility is secured upon closing.
  • Establishes work schedules for employees and submits to the Outdoor Recreation director for approval. Distributes and balances workload in accordance with planned activities and established directives. Provides on-the-job training to new employees.
  • Monitors the proper rotation of lifeguards for stands or breaks and ensures that each employee has enough work to keep busy. Resolves routine complaints with minimal impact to the activity and refers more complex or unique situations to their supervisor. Reports to supervisor on employee performance progress and training needs and disciplinary problems.
  • Performs other duties as assigned. May be required to work evenings, weekends and holidays.
