Housekeeping Technician I
Position Type: Entry level. Full-time employment, 40 hours per week. Non-exempt under Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)
Description: The Housekeeping Technician I position is an entry-level custodial position responsible for supporting the cleanliness, safety, and overall readiness of Norfolk Botanical Garden’s indoor and outdoor facilities. This role performs daily cleaning tasks, assists with event and program setups, and helps maintain a welcoming environment for guests and staff. The Technician I works under the guidance of supervisory staff and senior Facilities team members, learning and applying best practices in facility care while contributing to the overall appearance and functionality of the Garden.
Essential Functions:
- Perform daily and deep-clean custodial duties, including restroom sanitation, dusting, vacuuming, mopping, laundry, floor scrubbing, and trash removal.
- Perform minor building maintenance tasks and monitor custodial supply levels, report any discrepancies to Housekeeping Operations Manager.
- Set up rooms for events, staff meetings, education classes, and other scheduled activities according to requested layouts.
- Respond to guest or staff cleaning needs promptly during shifts, ensuring positive visitor experience.
- Perform NBG safety procedures including lock-out/tag out, locating and operating firefighting equipment, wearing safety/PPE as needed etc. (training provided).
- Assist with Garden-wide special events and other duties as assigned.
Essential Physical Functions:
- Must have the ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
- Must have the ability to work outside for 8 hours in heat, cold or light rain and can continuously walk, stand, bend, twist and/or stoop.
- Must have the ability to push, pull and perform manual labor during working hours.
- Must have the ability to work on ladders for extended periods.
- Must have the ability to drive a golf cart.
Qualifications:
- Schedule subject to Garden needs; weekends required.
- Must be 18 years of age or older.
- Must be able to work independently as well as part of a team, be self-motivated, and customer service oriented.
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
- Experience with floor maintenance such as stripping and waxing floors is highly preferred.
