Full job description
A restaurant hostess’s primary duties involve greeting guests, managing reservations and waitlists, and coordinating seating to ensure a positive first impression and smooth flow of service.
Key responsibilities
- Guest reception: Greet guests warmly upon arrival and provide a positive first impression.
- Reservations and waitlist management: Take, manage, and confirm reservations, as well as accurately monitor and manage the waitlist.
- Seating coordination: Strategically seat guests, coordinate with servers on table availability, and escort parties to their tables.
- Communication and assistance: Answer phones, handle guest inquiries and complaints, and introduce the server to the guests.
- Front of house maintenance: Ensure the reception area is clean and tidy, and assist in preparing tables.
- Support for other staff: Help waitstaff during rushes, assist with side work, and sometimes help with tasks like taking to-go orders or payments.
- Menu knowledge: Have a strong knowledge of menu items to answer questions and make recommendations when requested.
